|In recent years, Polytechnique Montreal has developed novel thermo-hydrogeochemical modeling approaches to simulate standing column wells(SCW) operation and to anticipate related phenomena, such as mineral precipitation and dissolution occurring under diverse operation conditions (i.e., pressure, temperature, dissolved oxygen, water flow rate, etc.). These models have largely been validated using digital reference solutions, but have not had their validity confirmed by experimental validation to demonstrate their quality as conceptual tools available to the research and engineering community.|
This PhD position aims to use isotopic hydrogeological approaches, uncommon in geothermal research, to quantify certain aspects key to optimizing SCW functioning in real-world settings. To achieve this, the candidate will have access to Polytechnique Montreal's mobile geothermal laboratory (MGL), the only facility of its kind in the world, designed to replicate the operation of a ten-floor building, as well as actual SCW installations in the Montreal area. S/He will thereby be able to acquire high quality, real-operation data, while controlling most boundary conditions of the system.
The ideal candidate should have bachelor and master's degrees in geological engineering, geology, hydrochemistry, hydrogeology, geochemistry, geothermics, or environmental chemistry. An education and experience in the chemical or physical sciences could also be considered, if the candidate demonstrates a strong interest in hydrogeology. Knowledge of isotopic geochemistry and/or geothermics would be advantageous. The candidate should be autonomous, flexible, proactive, and able to work well as part of a team.
Funding is available for three years, with an ideal start date of May 1, 2017. The start date is flexible, however, depending on the calendar of the selected candidate's university of origin.
